The Qualification Season: A Focus on… Clinical Negligence

10th June 2019

As part of The Qualification Season, a series of blogs by CapeClarke aimed at trainee solicitors looking to qualify in September 2019, we will give a brief overview of the market conditions affecting many of the core legal disciplines that trainee solicitors look to qualify into.

The next area of law for discussion is Clinical Negligence.

The Current Market

The clinical negligence market has remained busy in 2018, following on from a fairly buoyant year in 2017. The past couple of years have also seen the number of firms/teams offering Clinical Negligence / Healthcare services increase – particularly in the Leeds market, where national firms new to Leeds, such as Bevan Brittan, have established themselves as alternatives to the already existing offering in Leeds and Yorkshire.

The impact of costs reforms in the clinical negligence area, first introduced in late 2016, was not as significant as many thought it would be and steady instructions in this area continued throughout 2019 – albeit, with instructions on the defendant side being slightly more numerous.

Is this a good career option?

Clinical negligence has always been an excellent career choice in the past and continues to be a buoyant area with good prospects going forward.

September 2019 opportunities

We expect there to be a good number of clinical negligence roles available for external NQs come September 2019.
