American philosopher Sam Keen once wrote that “Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability”.
A timeless quote that resonates through cultures, populations and industries. Indeed, for many, it is true – it is the time to take a long(ish) holiday, spend time with the families, enjoy the sun (overseas obviously!) and recharge the batteries before heading into a busy Autumn and Winter. You should use this time to rest but that doesn’t mean it has to be fruitless.
If you are already registered with a legal recruitment consultant, you will have probably been told by now that August is traditionally slow on the recruitment front. Obviously, it takes a back-seat as partners and legal recruitment managers are away on holiday and it is true that things will slow down. However, this “downtime” is the perfect time to really assess your legal job and think about whether a move to a new law firm is what is required to rejuvenate your career and renew your enthusiasm in the law.
If it is something you have been contemplating, now is the time to put your CV together or, if you have one already, tidy it up. You can refer to our CV preparation guide here. You can always give one of our directors a call for any assistance you may need.
More senior candidates should take the time to think about any “following” or network they would utilise if they move into a partner or director role. We can also offer advice about the type of business case that is best for you depending upon your level of contacts and work you can bring.
Have a look at the market and decide which type of law firm you would be interested in exploring opportunities with and think about what you have to offer them. Ultimately, you may take this time to assess your options and decide that the best thing to do is to stay at your current firm. However, even if this is the case, you will still feel like you have really taken the time and decided what is best for your legal career.
Use the opportunity of a quieter Summer to think about where you want your legal career to go.
